Free Enterprise: The Art of Citizen Space Exploration Jan 19 - Apr 19, 2013 California US
Free Enterprise: The Art of Citizen Space Exploration is the first contemporary art exhibition in the U.S. to present an international array of artists and organizations who are exploring the potential democratization of space exploration and the intersection between artistic production and civilian space travel. The possibility of fulfilling the human dream to fly into space has been encouraged by a major political and cultural shift away from state-sponsored space activities towards a private enterprise model.
Co-curated by Tyler Stallings, artistic director of the Culver Center and director of Sweeney Art Gallery, and by Marko Peljhan, UCIRA Co-Director and associate professor of art and media arts and technology at UC Santa Barbara. Both curators are involved with the Leonardo Space Art workshop, sponsored by MIT’s Leonardo journal, and the International Astronautical Federation Committee for the Cultural Utilization of Space, a largely European-based organization that promotes and facilitates the innovative utilization of space by cultural sectors of society internationally.
The exhibition is the largest one organized by UCR ARTSblock, encompassing all three venues (California Museum of Photography, Culver Center of the Arts, and Sweeney Art Gallery) and using 8,600 square feet of galleries.
Free Enterprise is comprised of twenty-five artists, collectives, organizations, and initiatives, which includes several commissions for the exhibition and additions to the permanent collections at UCR ARTSblock. A variety of media will be represented: drawing, photography, video, sculpture, painting, and artifacts by: The Arts Catalyst (U.K.), Lowry Burgess (US), Center for Land Use Interpretation (US), Richard Clar (FR/US), Skeith De Wine (US), Kitsou Dubois (FR), eteam (US), European Space Agency Topical Team Arts and Science (INT), Final Frontier Design (US), Cultural Center of European Space Technologies / KSEVT (EU), Agnes Meyer-Brandis (DE), MIR – Microgravity Interdisciplinary Research (INT), Forrest Myers (US), Trieste Constructivist Cabinet (IT/SL), Nejc Trošt (US), Trevor Paglen (US), Carrie Paterson (US), Frank Pietronigro (US), Bradley Pitts (US), Cosmokinetial Kabinet Noordung – Postgravityart (SL), Projekt Atol Flight Operations (US, SL), Connie Samaras (US), Christian Waldvogel (CH), Arthur Woods (CH), and XCOR Aerospace, Inc.
