Sarah Jane Pell (Vice Chair)

Under the ToR, the Current Chairs and Vice Chair terms end 2024. All Committee Offices are all up for renewal in Milan at the 2024 International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2024). Through our continued work with the IAF, the ITACCUS Chair and Vice-Chairs place special emphasis on the new generation of space experts, the expansion of equal opportunities, and the integration of new countries and start-up companies into the global space network. 24 ITACCUS members are planning on attending IAC 2024 Milan. 7 are still considering/seeking sponsorship. The Space and Society (E.1. Symposium) tracks recieved 439 Abstracts in Total. Updates from the Symposium Chairs: The inaugural call for papers for the technical session E.1. 2. Space for All: Decolonial Practices in Space Co-Chaired between the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Space Education and Outreach Committee (SEOC), and Cultural Utilisation of Space Committee (ITACCUS) received 45 submissions with a selection acceptance rate of 34%. E.1.9. Space Culture: New Processes of Public Engagement in Space through Culture and Art received 39 submissions. E.5.3. Contemporary Arts Practice and Outer Space: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach Chaired by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Cultural Utilisation of Space Committee (ITACCUS) received 25 abstracts, with a record number from EU/MX/Asia regions, and an acceptance rate of 50%. We are anticipating many ITACCUS technical papers and presentations in parallel IP sessions. For example, the ITACCUS papers relating to Lunar Exploration and Solar Systems could transfer to A.3. IP. Nahum, Nelly Ben Ayoun Stepanian and Annick Bureaud launching the book "Space Feminisms - People, Planets, Power" held at Gaité Lyrique, Auditorium, Paris FR, 26 March 2024. This book is available: www.bloomsbury.com/9781350346321

ITACCUS endorsed the launch of the book "Space Feminisms - People, Planets, Power" co-edited by Marie-Pier Boucher, Claire Webb, Annick Bureaud, and Nahum, and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. The book "Space Feminisms" is the result of three years of hard work involving some of the most prominent voices in the space sector reflecting on feminism and space. It challenges traditional space narratives to reimagine our journey through the cosmos from feminist perspectives. In this event, Nahum, Nelly Ben Ayoun Stepanian and Annick Bureaud explored manifestos, historical archives, videos, and a conversation with the co-authors and a participants of the book the authors. This includes IAF & ITACCUS members. Through the prism of art and culture, they illuminated the stories and current status of the space sector.

International Space University (ISU) Alumni Networking event

The International Astronautical Federation Spring Meetings in Paris are not just a hub of dialogues and selection of papers for the International Astronautical Congress but also a great reunion for the International Space University Faculty and Alumni. This was a lovely informal opportunity for ISU alumni to reconnect, and keep the team vibe going that drives us forward in preparation for ISU's 36th annual Space Studies Program (SSP) session in Houston, Texas, USA 2024, and projects beyond that amplify the international, intercultural and interdisciplinary space programs we embark on worldwide.

Over the last ten years the topics addressed by the ITACCUS Committee have evolved following cultural, political, societal and technological progresses and innovations both in the use of commercial space actors and in the increased accessibility and engagement through new open-source assets and ubiquitous social media platforms. The rapid evolution in space engineering, environment and shifting global economics requires us to develop new non-conventional design processes and creative partnerships. ITACCUS follows this evolution and through technical sessions in the IAA Space and Society symposium, and the IAF Space Education and Outreach symposium which annually sees the submissions of more than 400 abstracts; and by hosting a Global Networking Forum, ITACCUS reveals itself as an inspirational knowledge hub within the IAC, and makes a virtual bridge among the space and cultural specialists around the world for a better integration of the new technological and cultural challenges for mutual benefit and inspiration. Other activities throughout the year include facilitated collaborations, workshops and meetings around the world for critical conversation and exchange; advocacy and networking promoting, developing and raising the profile and quality of ‘cultural utilisation of space’ within the space community, the cultural community, and general public; and delivering and endorsing quality cultural products including policies, publications, and partnerships. We look forward to working with you at IAC 2024 Milan, and IAC 2025 Sydney.
